While earning her Business Management degree from Georgia State University, Dawn launched Up in the Air, Inc., a manufacturing company producing original, top quality merchandise for hockey and figure skaters. Through the 15 years of Up in the Air’s growth, product development and branding became Dawn’s strengths and led her to assist other global companies with their marketing efforts. Dawn’s trademarks and product designs remain industry-recognized, as does her status of being one of the youngest business owners to receive an NHL license agreement.
Dawn’s studio art, paired with her insight into future markets via current trends, led to the launch of Interlokit Inc. Interlokit’s patents provide multiple industries and their customers the ability to understand, shape, and define the next-wave of smart devices using INTERLOKIT’s ConcealSmart™ device accessories. Thought-filled planning with industry leaders, licensees, and consumer groups makes hidden wearable technology one of the most secure and practical tools for recording data, sharing information, and efficient communication.
Steve Chininis
Industrial Designer and Product Innovator
Stephen Chininis, IDSA, is a Professor of Practice in the School of Industrial Design at Georgia Tech and the principal of Chininis Product Development Group. He specializes in the integration of invention, innovation, and an entrepreneurial spirit in the work he does and within the design studios he teaches.
His Make10 initiative at Georgia Tech, established in 2009, has grown into an exciting incubator environment for students to test new product ideas. He also is a coach and mentor for the CREATE-X program on campus. CREATE-X is a Georgia Tech initiative to instill entrepreneurial confidence in students and empower them to launch real startups.
Chininis' ongoing professional work includes developing products for the toy and housewares industries. Through his impressive patent portfolio, he has licensed more than 100 products with industry giants Griffin Technology, Fisher-Price, Playkool, Tomy, Hasbro, Conair, Newell Rubbermaid…and many, many more. His designs have won several awards, including “Parenting Magazine’s 10 Best Toys”.
Joanne Hernandez
Professional Artisan Jeweler and Metalsmith
As a multi-disciplined, award winning, artist - Joanne brings to INTERLOKIT a wealth of experience in jewelry design and production. The connection people develop with Joanne’s art informs her beautiful craftsmanship and passion for creating objects. Joanne creates pieces that are not only unique but that take on a life of their own, finding inspiration in the natural world and the interpersonal relationships she has created. Joanne has achieved a consistent presence in exhibitions, auctions, and the international jewelry scene.
Hernandez has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honors) degree in jewelry design and metalsmithing, spending many years working alongside other celebrated artisans in her field. Hernandez is currently the Jewelry Department Coordinator at the Spruill Center for the Arts and is also an independent, professional artist instructor. Joanne finds joy in guiding others to discover their artistic voice by sharing her knowledge on jewelry, metalsmithing, specialized jewelry techniques, fiber arts, and fiber dying.
Meaghan Kennedy
Innovation Consultant
Meaghan Kennedy, MPH founded Orange Sparkle Ball after graduating from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and conducting HIV research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Orange Sparkle Ball is an innovation and impact consultancy that accelerates initiatives in the private and public sector, as well as works with startups. Meaghan has taught at Georgia Institute of Technology and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She has been a guest reviewer at Georgia Tech since 2007, a judge and mentor for the Global Social Venture Competition and Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA), a mentor for social entrepreneurs and is frequently invited to sit on innovation and entrepreneurial panels.
Alex Perrone
Senior Communications Manager
Fluent in three languages, a novelist, and recent graduate from the University of Georgia, Alex brings a fresh assortment of communication skills to Interlokit. In addition to initiating and overseeing Interlokit’s blog feed, Alex received a double major in Entertainment & Media Studies and Romance languages alongside a double minor in both Spanish and English. With his passion for the written and spoken word, Alex enjoys connecting with other cultures through travel, food, films, and literature. Alex is also a regular volunteer for the UGA and Athens, Georgia chapters of Habitat for Humanity.
Gail Starr
Strategic Planning and Global Brand Management
After receiving an MBA from Columbia University, a BA from Washington University in St. Louis, and a Diplôme de Fin d’Etudes from the Conservatoire de Caen (France), Gail embarked on a career specializing in strategic planning and global brand management. Gail brings to Interlokit a wealth of experience with powerhouse companies such as Calvin Klein, BNY Mellon, General Mills, Nabisco, Steuben/Corning, and DMC. Gail enjoys melding the financial analysis needed in crafting business strategy with the tangible rewards generated from creating new consumer goods.
Having worked abroad, Gail speaks several languages. She is also an avid amateur classical pianist and chamber musician. These skills fuel her passion for the Arts and complement her dedicated service on the Board of Directors for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Equally important to Gail is her participation in Ribbons of Hope (a non-profit benefiting women and children in the Southeast) and her decade-long service as a Merit Badge counselor for the Boys Scouts of America. Gail also recently completed her 5-year tenure on the Board of The Isdell Center for Global Leadership.
